John Glenn made space history in 1962 when he bacame the first American to orbit the Earth. Aboard the Mercury capsule Friendship 7, Glenn made three orbits of the Earth during his 4 hour trip. After his flight, Glenn was grounded and not allowed to fly in the future Gemini and Apollo programs because he was considered such a hero for his accomplishment, NASA did not want to risk his life on future space flights. Glenn wanted to return to space, and tried his hardest to return to the active astronaut corps. Finally, on October 29, 1998, 36 years after his first flight, Glenn returned to space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. During the mission, Glenn carried out an extensive number of experiments relating to aging and space travel. Glenn once again became an American hero.
